Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening is a simple surgical procedure to remove excess gum tissue and sometimes bone. This will expose more of the natural tooth structure, and the treatment can be carried out for several different reasons.

A healthy smile is often attributed to straight, white teeth. But honestly, an award-winning smile begins with healthy gums. A gummy smile is when you smile and too much gum tissue is visible. You may have been born with an excess amount of gum tissue that covers your tooth roots, causing your teeth to appear shorter than they really are. Although your underlying teeth are healthy, they are hidden beneath the gum tissue, which can cause a child-like appearance of your teeth.

Compassionate, efficient, and effective is how to describe the entire team at Karmazin Dental. The skills of each team member are unparalleled in the area. We live and breathe a collaborative approach in developing your personal oral health plan. You will not find a more technologically advanced practice that offers a more relaxing and comfortable setting. Your smile is our priority because we all strongly believe that your smile is a foundational gateway to your personality. It can drive your level of self-esteem and self-confidence. Call, text, or email us for an appointment for an evaluation on the benefits of a crown lengthening procedure for you. Our number is 605-323-1320 and you can find the entire team at Karmazin Dental, 5701 S. Remington Pl, Sioux Fall, SD 57108, where we have plenty of free parking.

What we know, is that our patients FEEL our passion.  They feel that we are their biggest cheerleaders.  They feel that we want the best for them.   They do NOT feel judged.  We want to give every patient the opportunity to say YES to the best dental care.

Are You a Candidate for Crown Lengthening?

If you are unhappy with the appearance of your gummy smile you can be a candidate for this treatment. A development of excess gum tissue or an uneven gumline can negatively affect your smile. Our professional team will reshape, also known as gum contouring, your gum line to shorten the excess gum tissue and increase the length of your teeth.

Another reason a gummy smile occurs is if you have an overactive upper lip. The muscles associated with this part of your mouth can pull the upper lip higher than where it normally should be. While this does not necessarily mean you have a gummy smile, it can give the illusion that you do. Nonetheless, this can also be treated with a crown lengthening procedure.

The Crown Lengthening Healing Process

Full crown lengthening recovery can take several days after a laser treatment and up to two weeks with a scalpel. However, you can begin eating soft foods and returning to work the day after your crown lengthening surgery. You will need to come back to see us for a follow-up visit 4 to 6 weeks after your procedure.

During your crown lengthening recovery, we will provide you with complete instructions on how to treat your surgery site. After the anesthesia has worn off, you may feel some discomfort and we will prescribe pain relievers and a specialized chlorhexidine mouth rinse, depending on the extent of your surgery. It will be best to follow a soft diet for the first few days to allow for proper healing.

The Crown Lengthening Procedure

Karmazin Dental usually performs crown lengthening with the administration of a local anesthetic or an additional dental sedation. The duration of your procedure will depend on how many teeth are being treated and whether any bone needs to be removed along with the soft tissue. It will also depend on whether our team uses a laser for the treatment or a surgical scalpel. Once we achieve an aesthetically pleasing crown length, the treated area is cleaned, restored, and the procedure is completed.

Excessive gums, more commonly known as a gummy smile, can be treated quickly and painlessly. We often use a process called laser therapy that will provide you with a comfortable procedure.

Our detail conscious team will first examine your smile to identify the extent of the gum tissue and identify the proportions or balance of gum to teeth ratio with your smile. A digital or traditional form of an impression will also be taken to determine specific details per tooth. X-rays will also capture the condition of your bones and roots below the surface of the gums. This examination is needed to ensure your oral health and you have the adequate amount of healthy jawbone and tooth roots available for the procedure to be performed. Extensive planning yields favorable results.

If a laser is used for your treatment, it is pointed directly at the excess gums for removal. The laser does not produce any heat or vibration, making it a painless and easy treatment. The laser also seals the blood vessels instantaneously resulting in less bleeding or swelling.

During your crown lengthening procedure, excess gum and bone tissue are removed and reshaped to expose more of the natural tooth. If a surgical scalpel is used, sutures are used to close the gingival tissue around the tooth, and a band-aid material is placed around the tooth to allow this tissue to heal correctly.

The crown lengthening procedure can be done at Karmazin Dental in a matter of minutes with a laser and a little longer with a surgical scalpel.
