Implant Supported Dentures

An implant supported denture is a denture restoration that is attached to surgically placed implants. A traditional denture rests on your gums and is held in place with dental adhesive. An implant supported denture can be your restoration option if you are missing your teeth and have enough jawbone density to support the implants. An implant supported denture has special clips that snap onto attachments on the implants.

Compassionate, efficient, and effective is how to describe the entire team at Karmazin Dental. The skills of each team member are unparalleled in the area. We live and breathe a collaborative approach in developing your personal oral health plan. You will not find a more technologically advanced practice that offers a more relaxing and comfortable setting. Your smile is our priority because we all strongly believe that your smile is a foundational gateway to your personality. It can drive your level of self-esteem and self-confidence. Call, text, or email us for an appointment for an evaluation on the benefits of implant supported dentures for you. Our number is 605-323-1320 and you can find the entire team at Karmazin Dental, 5701 S. Remington Pl, Sioux Fall, SD 57108, where we have plenty of free parking.

You can have an implant supported denture placed in either the upper or lower jaw. You should still plan on removing your implant supported denture daily to clean the denture and gum area beneath. You should not really sleep with the implant supported dentures at night. You might prefer to have permanent crown and bridgework that cannot be removed. Karmazin Dental will consider your needs and preferences when we review your options with you.

Benefits That You Can Expect

There are some benefits associated with implant supported dentures when compared with conventional dentures. Here are a few for you to consider when deciding if this is the right solution for your situation.

  • Implant supported dentures are far more stable than conventional dentures. They are less likely to become loose while speaking.
  • Implant supported dentures improve your chewing ability. You will be able to eat harder and stickier foods.
  • Compared with traditional dentures, implant supported dentures tend to fit better and are more comfortable. There is less friction on the gums from wearing the implant supported denture.
  • Many people consider implant supported dentures to be more natural looking than conventional dentures.
  • Your jawbone is preserved, and further bone loss is prevented with this option.

How Implant Supported Dentures Actually Work

There are two types of implant supported dentures: bar-retained and ball-retained. With both methods, the denture will be made of an acrylic base that looks like your natural gums. Porcelain or acrylic crowns matching your natural teeth are attached to the base. Both versions of dentures need at least two implants for proper support.

  • Bar-retained dentures- A thin metal bar following the curve of your arch is attached to two to five implants that have been surgically placed in your jawbone. Clips are fitted to the bar, the denture or both. The denture fits directly over the bar and is securely clipped into place with attachments.
  • Ball-retained dentures- Each implant has a metal attachment that is ball shaped. These ball shaped attachments snap directly into a nylon socket on the backside of the denture.

The Procedure for Implant Supported Dentures

During your initial exam, the detail-focused team at Karmazin Dental will review your medical and dental histories, take X-rays, and create impressions of your teeth and gums so that models can be made. We might also order a computed tomography (CT) scan of your mouth. This will show us where your sinuses and nerves are located above your upper teeth. It helps us to make sure they will not be affected by the implant placement. A CT scan might also be done to determine the jawbone density and to pinpoint the perfect locations for the implants. If you are not wearing a complete denture, we will make you one. You will use this temporary denture until your implant supported denture is placed.

By making this temporary denture, we can also determine the ideal position for artificial crowns in the final denture. When the temporary denture is finished, we will use a copy of it as a guide to direct the implants in the correct positions. It will take about four appointments for the entire completion.

We will now administer a local anesthetic to numb the immediate area. Next, we will create a small incision and proceed to surgically place the tiny titanium post into your jawbone. We will close the site with sutures. Karmazin Dental will wait several months allowing the jawbone and the implants to integrate or attach and fuse together.

After we have confirmed with X-rays that the implants have become fused with the bone, the second surgery can be scheduled. This surgery is simpler than the first. A small incision is made to expose the tops of the implants. We then attach an abutment or extension to the titanium post to reach the surface of your gumline. There is now minimal soft tissue healing and then we will make a final impression of your gums and the abutments. This is the roadmap for the final denture framework, ball or bar, precise locations.

With the final denture now fabricated, we have some small adjustments for either a bar-retained or a ball-retained final implant supported denture. When completed, we will proceed to your final fitting to make minor adjustments.

DENTAL PARTNERSHIP

COREY & MOLLY KARMAZIN

Karmazin Dental LOVES continuing education.  This means we invest a SIGNIFICANT amount of time and money to learning from the BEST in the country.  This ignites our passion and allows us to bring advanced knowledge back to our patients.  WE invest heavily in technology.  This technology aids us in proper diagnosis and helps us to make the best decisions on our patients’ behalf.

The Aftercare of Your Implant Supported Dentures

Karmazin Dental will advise you to remove your dentures at night and for cleaning. We would also like you to carefully clean around the attachments.

We will test all the parts to make sure they are secure. Even though your new denture is stable, it could still move slightly when you chew. This slight movement could cause rubbing against your gums, which will cause sore spots. We will check your gums and will check your bite after the insertion of the denture.

The clips or other attachments on your dentures will need to be replaced every 6 to 12 months. They are made of a plastic material (nylon) and will show wear with continued use.
