What is Full Mouth Reconstruction?
Full mouth reconstruction is the process of restoring and/or rebuilding all of the teeth in both the upper and lower jaws. This process can restore your smile, its appearance, function, and/or comfort. Overall, full mouth reconstruction refers to a combination of one or more dental treatments to rebuild all of the teeth in your mouth. This process is always personalized to meet the patient’s individual needs and goals.
Full mouth reconstruction may be recommended by your dentist if you have multiple missing, broken, or damaged teeth, extensive tooth decay or gum disease, significant tooth wear from grinding or erosion, jaw pain, bite problems, TMJ, or damage to your teeth or mouth from an injury. Depending on what treatment you may need, your dentist may recommend the following:
- Crowns and Bridges: A dental crown is an artificial tooth-shaped cap that is fitted over a weak or decaying tooth. There are a number of reasons dental crowns are used. Some of the most common are to fix a chipped tooth, to prevent grinding due to stress or misalignment, to fix a cavity, or to protect a dental implant. Abutments are the supports that hold the dental bridge in place. - Full or Partial Dentures: Full dentures are made of acrylic and artificial teeth that are designed to look like natural teeth. They are worn when most or all of the teeth in the upper or lower jaw are missing. The dentures rest on the gums and sometimes require adhesive. Partial dentures can be removed and are used if some teeth are still intact. They are connected to your remaining natural teeth.
- Dental Implants: Dental implants require surgery. They are placed into your jawbone and serve as the missing roots of the teeth. These implants are fused with the jawbone, so there is no chance the tooth will move or slip.
- Veneers: A veneer is custom-made of porcelain or composite material that is bonded to the front of the tooth to improve its appearance and close any gap.
